We are facing a shortage of veterinary professionals.
Research conducted by Banfield last fall revealed an estimated 75 million pets in the U.S. may not have access to the veterinary care they need by 2030, with an important factor being a critical shortage of veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Further, with 90% of veterinary professionals identifying as white, there is an urgent need to diversify the industry’s talent pipeline. At Banfield, we believe there is hope for our profession but only if we all act together – now.
Banfield Pet Academy
Banfield Pet Academy aims to promote responsible pet ownership and inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals in local communities across the U.S. This program was established 15 years ago to inspire future veterinary professionals by introducing them to veterinarians and veterinary technicians in their community. Since its launch, the program is on track to reach 100,000 kids by the end of 2022.
There are three editions of Banfield Pet Academy, all designed in partnership with Banfield medical professionals. You can find these resources below.

- Create your team. Please note that while any veterinary professional can support a Pet Academy presentation, we created these materials for veterinarians or credentialed veterinary technicians to present.
- Reach out to local K-12 schools or youth organizations in your community to see who might be interested in facilitating a presentation.
- Schedule your presentation and have fun! Be sure to talk about your own personal experiences. For grade school students, consider bringing a stuffed animal to show the kids your process for performing wellness exams.
